Tangents
Considering all the prep work I did on the floor and trans tunnel last week, I really thought I was going to get a lot further than I did today. I can’t blame anybody but myself. I mean, who really cares if the seam between the front of the trans tunnel and the floor is overlapped 1/4″ and hammer formed? It takes considerable time to stretch an outside radius this much without tearing the metal. Why not just weld it and be done with it? The guy driving it sure isn’t going to see it from where he’s sitting. There’s even going to be an engine and transmission in there eventually and nobody but nobody is going to see up under here.
To make matters worse, when I was done with that I started cleaning the spot welds on the underside between the floor and the firewall when I could’ve been fab’ing the rest of the driver’s side mount up to the firewall. Click the picture and you’ll see it still isn’t done, but completing the mount that some hack cut out with a torch (probably to clear an exhaust) would make some of these welds all but impossible to get to and since I was already underneath, on my back, with the sander & grinder, I might as well do them all.
The inside is coming along considering what we started with. I’ve still got to drill the hole to put the steering colum back in, but I want to get all of the welding done on that side while the column is out of the way. In all reality I can’t give any reason for wanting to take the time to do these things other than to say it’s the way I’d want it done if it were mine.
I could blow this out and be done with it, but I’m ahead of schedule anyway. If nobody notices these areas then I’ve done my job. Let ‘em notice the chop.
But enough is enough for now. I didn’t get done what I expected, but I’m glad I did what I did and tomorrow is another day. I’m not even cleaing up.
