Ten Years After
Leigh and I were just sitting and remembering when we were running our first bootleg, Linux-based server out of our basement in Malaga, NJ. Our first site was called, originally enough, TheBasement.com and it was like the AM days of the Internet; we just hacked our way in and were broadcasting. When I went to bed, we’d shut down. That name has long since become some pseudo music site once we let go of it.
We then started FlyingMelons.com, our first experience with a web-hosting company. Generally speaking it’s like being a renter on someone else’s computer. At the time, they had much more power than we did, a faster connection, and they’re supposed to have to deal with the security headaches and whatnot, but it seems that through those 10+ years we had more than our fair share of ups-and-downs. It was, however, a learning experience.
Nowadays, broadband connections and powerful home computers are so commonplace that just about every home user has more at their disposal than both of us combined back then. The site you’re looking at right now is the result of a lack of service from that nameless web-host and is currently being hosted by bluehost.com – the same hosting company that supports some other sites of our creation like TheRailBarAndGrill.net. So far, all has been good with them. [Unfortunately all of your comments had been lost during the trasition from our previous host, but not to worry, since I've kept my own backups we have them here and I may republish them someday. ]
We’ve obtained the legal rights to this site’s name (and a few others) and are discussing setting up our own server here at the house again. If Leigh has already given you a different address or email to keep in touch don’t worry – we get them. When and if we do decide to go back to our own set-up, you’ll still be accessing this front end by typing in the same URL. It’ll be a bumpless transfer.
At the time of this writing we’ve got a six-month contract with bluehost just to be able to keep in touch with all of you until we do decide which direction to take this. You don’t make old friends y’know.
Here’s looking forward to the next 10+ years on the web.
