1958 Chevrolet Series 40 Viking

Published by admin under 1958Chevy

Rex It’s hard to believe I’ve had this truck for a few years already. My youngest son has aptly named it “Rex” due to it’s large size and green color. My wife calls it by the same name now, but somehow I think she means “wrecks”. :) While doing all of the little things you normally do to a truck that you’re using, I discovered a “State of Colorado – Ft. Logan” decal on the doors (under the green fleet paint) and also an “Airdrome Control Tower” sticker in the center of the dash that shows what the different tower light signals & sequences represented.I imagine it did some service as an airport truck there, but by the time I got it, it had the Grain Box Dump. Since purchasing this truck and the subsequent work shown on The Original Web Page from 2002, we’ve used it for some jobs around our yard and for our neighbors. I’ve sanded and painted all the trim pieces (i.e. mirrors, brackets, bumper, wheels, grill, etc) a Cream color and still intend on painting the body the original dark blue. In addition to everything shown on the original page, I’ve since done some other repairs and maintenance:

  • New Rubber all the way around
    • Mud and Snow in the Rear
    • Highway Tread on the Steer Tires
  • New Rear Bearings, Brakes and Seals
  • Lighting
    • Converted the Front Parking Lights to 2-filament Marker/Blinkers
    • Re-wired Tail, Rear Blinker and Bed Marker Lights
  • Cut, Welded and Generally Straightened the Front Bumper
  • … and more that I’ll list as I think of it.

I’m not interested in restoring it, but do appreciate the history and nostalgia. The 235 cu. in. inline six will stay. It’s just too cool. And after straightening the two rear pushrods in my vice, it’s running much better. ;-)  As the budget allows, I’d like to get a set of fentons.
